My name is Amber Douglas and I am a nationally Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, (C.T.R.S.)
Here is my story.
I have been providing recreation therapy services for over 10 years in residential, medical, educational, and community settings. I have provided these services for children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics with physical, mental/emotional, and developmental disabilities. Having worked with such diverse populations and diagnoses, I have been able to provide recreation therapy treatment in many diversified ways in order help each individual reach their goals.
Some time ago I was presented with the opportunity to provide recreation therapy one -on- one to a boy diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis. Because of TS, he has symptoms of mild Autism. These symptoms presented many barriers to his participation in things that should be fun for a child his age. His poor muscle development, poor balance, and lack of body control caused him a great deal of frustration. He would easily give up or just not try because he did not possess the skills or abilities to participate successfully. His lack of strength, balance, and skills also caused him frustration at school. His parents were at a loss as to how to help him. A mutual acquaintance happened to mention my name and suggested they try recreation therapy. After a consultation and explanation of services, they were sold.
I have been providing recreation therapy services on a weekly basis to this child for two years. Since he has been participating in recreation therapy his skills have noticeably improved. Before RT he could not lift his arms up to his head on his own. Now he can shoot baskets and swing a jump rope. Before RT he had difficulty sitting up in a desk or standing on his own. Now he can ride a bike, uphill, all on his own and he is trying his skills at skateboarding. Before RT he was afraid of getting into a swimming pool.
Now he eagerly WANTS to and CAN jump in the water on his own.
These are just a few examples of the amazing results that recreation therapy can provide.
Witnessing and being a part of these results is how TIERS Recreation Therapy came into being.
